Mayflies as resource pulses in Jurassic lacustrine ecosystems

چکیده

Abstract Resource pulses, occasional events of ephemeral resource superabundance, represent a fundamental mechanism by which energy, nutrients, and biomass are transported across ecotones. They widespread in extant ecosystems; however, little is known about their deep-time record. We report the earliest-known mayfly swarm from Early Jurassic Xiwan biota southern China. Our taphonomic sedimentological analyses show that these mayflies were buried on bottom calm lake after post-mating death. suite suggests complex mating-swarm behavior was already well established Jurassic. More importantly, our find represents pulse insects, can play substantial role nutrient transport aquatic ecosystems to surrounding terrestrial ecosystems. Such an aquatic-terrestrial ecosystem linkage may be key novelty Mesozoic lacustrine results high-light underappreciated ecological significance insects ecology.

Comparing resource pulses in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

Resource pulses affect productivity and dynamics in a diversity of ecosystems, including islands, forests, streams, and lakes. Terrestrial and aquatic systems differ in food web structure and biogeochemistry; thus they may also differ in their responses to resource pulses. However, there has been a limited attempt to compare responses across ecosystem types. Here, we identify similarities and d...

Periodical cicadas as resource pulses in North American forests.

Resource pulses are occasional events of ephemeral resource superabundance that occur in many ecosystems. Aboveground consumers in diverse communities often respond strongly to resource pulses, but few studies have investigated the belowground consequences of resource pulses in natural ecosystems. This study shows that resource pulses of 17-year periodical cicadas (Magicicada spp.) directly inc...

Helminthic Parasites as Heavy Metal Bioindicators in Aquatic Ecosystems

Abstract         Heavy metals have raised one of the most important problems in ecology and organisms life especially human being and animals. A variety of indicators including tissues of fish, birds and sediment have been used recently to measure the aquatic pollution with heavy metals. The aim of this study was to search the published articles in Iran a...

Environmental controls on Jurassic marine ecosystems during global warming

The fossil record has the potential to provide valuable insights into species response to past climate change if paleontological data are combined with appropriate proxies of environmental change. Here we use a novel, multivariate approach that combines a suite of geochemical proxies with high-resolution quantitative macroinvertebrate fossil data to study responses to early Toarcian warming (ca...

Theoretical perspectives on resource pulses.

Over the last several decades, there has been a growing appreciation of the importance of nonequilibrial phenomena and transient dynamics in explaining the structure of ecological communities. This paper provides an overview of theoretical themes related to resource pulses. Theoretical models suggest short-term responses to a single pulse can qualitatively differ from longer-term responses. Rec...
